Just Doula It

I always held an interest in all things childbirth, and I decided to make it a career soon after the birth of my son, Ty, born in 2005 I gave birth to him naturally, without the use of an epidural (but with the use of a fabulous doula!) My wonderful, gentle, loving doula helped my husband and I both feel so empowered and enriched by our birth experience, I knew I wanted to do something to help couples have the experience they hope for, and create lasting and positive memories for years to come. I began the certification process in May of 2005, and from that moment on, I knew I was in for a career change!

I am committed to this profession because I really believe that the birth culture in our society needs to change. We live in the information age, but so many people choose to sit back and let a birth “happen” to them just because that’s the way they were told it’s “supposed” to be. I love meeting with moms and couples, and hearing them express what they want for their birth, and then supporting them and seeing that birth experience become their own story that’s right for them. Doula work really comes from the heart. I feel so lucky to be able to support families and mothers in this special time in their lives.

Overall, I believe pregnancy and childbirth is a natural and normal process, not a medical condition. I encourage and support women wanting natural childbirth, but I am also comfortable working with all mothers-to-be and their ideal birth plan, whether it is non-medicated or medicated. I will help educate moms so that they understand the risks and benefits of each intervention so that they can choose the options that fit into their ideal birth plan. I believe every woman should have continuous support during her labor and birth, and every woman who wants one should have a doula present. I look forward to supporting and nurturing women and their families in the miracle of childbirth, ensuring positive feelings and blissful memories of their birth experience.

I truly love what I do; I am constantly keeping current on all things birth-related and finding ways to support couples in a better way, whether that be through education, keeping a pulse on the birth community here in Madison, or thinking of new ideas to help my students better prepare themselves in my classes.

In addition to this passion, I’m also fortunate to be a mother to two beautiful, naturally-birthed, breastfed boys who keep me running ALL the time!

Empowering Birth Services

As a woman, and mother to three wonderful children, I have experienced disappointments and joys during birth. Having experiences that left me feeling powerless and alone and then one that was so joyous I wish I could relive it over and over again. It is the joyous birth experiences that I want to help other women achieve. I provided support to the mother, father, and any friend or family members attending the birth. It is my goal for everyone involved to walk away from each birth with beautiful, lasting memories.

I believe that every woman is entitled to a peaceful birth in which she can relax and feel confident in the care she will be given. Knowing her beliefs and values will not be inflicted upon, but instead will be carefully guarded and respected during the memorable event in her life.

It is my belief that giving birth is a sacred rite of passage. Every woman should be able to do it her own way. We all know that certain things are completely out of our control when we are giving birth. But then there are those things that we can take hold of and manipulate to our advantage. It is those things that are very important to focus on — the things that we can control and want to control. I believe that a woman who is in active labor should never feel like her rights have been taken away from her because she is too busy working hard to bring her child into this world. I will do everything in my power to give the type of support that will help prevent these things from happening. Each birth I attend is a remarkable gift and I am humbled that it has been given to me. Your needs and your beliefs are my priority.

Second Wind Birth Services

I am a birth and postpartum doula certified with DONA! The birth of a child changes a family’s life dramatically. The events of a baby’s birth significantly effects his or her parent’s perception of themselves and their newborn. As a birth doula, I support and encourage the woman and her partner so that they may have the kind of birth they want. I help the family understand their options when asked to make decisions, so that they are able to make the choice that is right for the mom and her family. I have special interest working with women wanting a VBAC, women with preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.

The transition a family makes with the addition of a child can be a very stressful time. As a postpartum doula, I help to ease the strain during the adjustment period. I provide intermittent care for older siblings, light housekeeping, meal preparation and more, all as needed. I have lots of experience working with babies with special needs. I have a very flexible schedule that allows me to provide services on short notice. I would love to help you and your family!

I have personal experience working prenatally, birthing and raising a child with Down Syndrome. For families that learn their child has Trisomy 21, I have the ability to help. I can assist the family to understand how this diagnosis will change their pregnancy, change their birth experience and I have many resources to help the family once the child is born.

All Four Trimesters Doula Service

Every mother deserves complete support and respect during childbirth. Every child deserves the very best beginning in life. My hope is that I can provide the encouragement, comfort, and advocacy so that the birth is joyful and empowers the mother in the life-long relationship with her child; and that the baby benefits from a healthy, peaceful birth experience.

I provide a facilitation role during labor and delivery based on the mother’s (and father’s) needs and desires. As a life-long educator, I have developed the ability to relate to a wide-range of people in a compassionate manner utilizing my communication and interaction skills.

Children give me hope for the future. If I can help support a mother in providing her child the best possible beginning in life — at birth — that is a calling I can’t resist. My passion is children. Whenever I have the chance I spend time with my two adult children, my ‘great’ nieces and nephews, and I volunteer at area pre-schools.

I believe that giving birth can be a beautiful, spiritual and natural experience. I am deeply committed to assisting my clients to prepare for and experience birth as a positive and empowering event. Every woman has the right to be supported and nurtured physically, emotionally and spiritually during the labor and birthing process, whether they have the resources or not. A doula’s presence at a birth provides the ultimate supportive care and advocacy for both mother and father.

In addition to doula work, I have a private counseling practice at the Alternative Therapy Center where I see clients for pain management, stress related issues and life transitions.

Education

DONA Birth Doula training; Professional training in hypnosis for pain management and relaxation techniques; Basic Swedish Massage training; Master’s in Social Work; Bachelor’s in Psychology.

Gail Doty

PT, ICCE, CD, CIMI

My background as a Physical Therapist has provided a foundation in anatomy and physiology, the use of movement, positioning and massage, but also a great sense of faith in the human body and spirit. My greatest satisfaction as a P.T. came not from applying high-tech treatments to a patient, but rather when I could teach someone about how their body works and thereby empower them to help themselves. This passion, combined with the experience of giving birth to my own four children (1 Cesarean and 3 VBAC) lead me to become a Childbirth Educator and later an Infant Massage Instructor. Over the past years I became drawn to complete the picture by being present to provide support to women and their partners during the time of labor and birth. I have had the privilege of providing support to several couples from my classes, and in October, 2006 completed my Doula certification.

I believe in each woman’s ability to give birth to her children and the profound impact this experience has on her life. Each labor and birth is a unique journey and I would be honored to accompany you on yours.

Services / Skills

Prenatal meeting to discuss your birth priorities, physical and emotional support during labor, post-partum follow up visit. References available upon request.

Education

BS PT from UW-Madison 1984, Childbirth Educator Training Course 2002, Infant Massage Instructor Training Course 2004, Doula Training Course 2006. Childbirth Educator and Doula Certification from International Childbirth Education Association.

Experience

Fifteen years direct patient care as a Physical Therapist. Three years experience as a Childbirth Educator. Two years experience as an Infant Massage Instructor. Began providing labor support August, 2006.

Births attended

Self, four (one Cesarean, three VBAC); other, three; as a Doula, seven.
